Nicky grew up in County Down, on the shores of Strangford Lough and, after attending grammar school in Strathearn School, Belfast, came to Dublin in 1996 to study medicine in Trinity College. She graduated with an honours degree in 2002 and began her hospital training in AMNCH Tallaght where she gained experience in Endocrinology, Urology, General Medicine and General Surgery.
She began her vocational general practice training in 2003 with the R.C.S.I. training scheme and worked in Paediatrics, Emergency Medicine, Psychiatry, and Medicine for the Elderly in various Dublin Teaching hospitals. During this time she acquired a special interest in Paediatrics and Medicine for the Elderly and she holds postgraduate diplomas in both of these areas.
After completing her vocational training in 2006 she had itchy feet and travelled to New Zealand and worked in a general practice in Wellington for several months before returning to Ireland in 2007. She worked in UCD for a short period teaching clinical skills to medical students and then worked in general practice on the northside of Dublin.
In September 2007 she started work full time in the Dun Laoghaire surgery. During this period she worked with Irish Health care in Blackrock Clinic in the area of medical screening and preventative medicine. She became a partner of the practice in January 2011.
She is an active member of the Dun Laoghaire faculty of General Practitioners and acted as treasurer for the faculty for many years.
She lives locally and is married to Michael and they have two children. She enjoys cooking (a bit of a theme for the staff – the annual staff BBQ is a culinary feast), swimming, tennis and travelling.
